2018 sees the 110th Birthday of Syston Scout Group. In January 1908 the Scouting Movement was officially launched and Syston registered in February 1908. Syston became the first official enrolled troop in Leicestershire consisting of 12 members with two patrol leaders. As part of an alternative programme a drum and fife band was started, the first Scout band in the UK, which is still active today.
The Scout Association has progressed over the years, such as including female members however Lord Baden Powell’s principles are still the basics of scouting from its laws, promise and commitment to young people.
Scouts are the UK’s biggest mixed youth organisation which change lives by offering 6 to 25-year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in communities.
Scouting helps children and young adults reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. Scouting helps young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world.
Scouts take part in activities as diverse as kayaking, abseiling, expeditions overseas, photography, climbing and zorbing. As a Scout you can learn survival skills, first aid, computer programming, or even how to fly a plane. There’s something for every young person. It’s a great way to have fun, make friends, get outdoors, express your creativity and experience the wider world.
